Remaindered books are copies publishers sell to retailers at a discounted price because demand for the book is well below the number of copies printed. Usually a publisher remainders a book to clear out inventory space. 

A book that is marked on the page edges by the distributor or publisher.  It identifies the book as being discounted and can be as simple as an ink dot, or as invasive as a large black slash.
