Until recently, I was an organizer for a labor union. Now I run Queerazon from a small Brooklyn apartment.
I started my online sales in 1999, selling stamps and coins to collectors on eBay, and have kept at it part-time ever since.
One weekend I had one too many mimosas at brunch and a friend suggested I sell "gay stuff" online. By the end of the meal Queerazon was being planned.
At first I thought I would be selling mostly naughty stuff, but that's not what happened. I'm selling books. Books about parenting a queer child, or about coming out at work, or how to be an ally, or how to be gay and a person of faith.
Before long I began to notice that most of these books were going to five states (West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama).
These five states are also where most of my abuse comes from. Several times a week I receive emails or Facebook messages calling me an abomination or saying I should be put against a wall and shot. My favorite was the guy who said he would bash my head in and drink wine out of my skull.
It made me realize how privileged I am to live in New York City where I can be out and lead a normal life.
So I end up not selling smut but helping others who don't have it as easy as I do. I think I like it better that way.
Christopher is an architect and originally from Singapore.
Queerazon has turned our lives into chaos and he is a saint for putting up with me.
He does so much more than tolerate our living room looking like a warehouse. Christopher organizes the finances, takes photographs of products, designs advertisements, and talks me down from the occasional bout of computer rage.
I love him with all of my heart and very lucky to have him in my life.
We adopted Smudge about two weeks before the Covid lockdown began.
He was shy at first, spending his first week with us hiding behind the toilet. Now he's rarely more than three feet away from either me or Christopher.
He earns his keep by guarding stamps while I'm sorting them.
