A landmark of transgender cultural history is reborn.
In 1993, artists and activists Mirha-Soleil Ross and Xanthra Phillippa MacKay unleashed Gendertrash From Hell, a radical Toronto-based zine that tore down the gatekeepers of both straight and cis queer respectability politics. At a time when trans voices were sidelined—even within LGBTQ+ movements—Gendertrash gave them the mic, loud and unapologetic.
Across four explosive issues, Gendertrash featured essays, interviews, collages, and soap operas by and for trans people, sex workers, and prisoners. Its pages were filled with rebellion, joy, survival, and fury—against the systems and movements that sought to erase them. Sections like “Trannies Speak Out” and “Hooker of the Month” captured the fierce intelligence and wit of a community creating itself in real time.
Now collected in print for the first time, Gendertrash From Hell includes the original zine layouts—lovingly remastered—as well as never-before-published materials from the unfinished fifth issue. Accompanied by new essays from Trish Salah and Leah Tigers, this edition resurrects a vital document of trans resistance, creativity, and community.
Irreverent, intimate, and incendiary, Gendertrash From Hell remains as defiant and necessary today as it was in the early 1990s—a raw, sexy, fearless reminder that trans liberation has always been a DIY revolution.
